Why Bermuda?
3,000 plus miles from the coast of Ireland, 650 miles from the United States. Bermuda is a dot of some 22 square miles in the Atlantic.
How could this small group of Islands become an attraction for so many international players out of the top drawer?
From the early seventies Bermuda has played host to many of the world’s most famous international players.
It all started with the Easter Classic which involved just one match on Easter Sunday: the Bermuda-Irish against Bermuda.
International players, mixing with the local players, would fly in on a Thursday and enjoy a couple of days of Bermuda’s famous hospitality.
Sunday would be match day then afterwards continue with the hospitality until they flew out on Tuesday with great memories.
Many long-lasting friendships were built over the years. 1988 the first World Rugby Classic, reaching out to many of those players, was started.
Bermuda then quickly became the meeting place for many players from all around the world.
Having had played against each other over the years and here was the chance to renew old friendships.
